The Little Things That Make Haldane So Special

As I’ve been spending more time reflecting on our school district, I keep coming back to this - It’s the small, everyday moments that shape our community.

There are so many things I love about Haldane - here are a few of my favorite things.

  • Haldane’s music and drama programs are at the top of the list. There is something incredibly special about watching our students take the stage - whether they’re performing in a concert or a full production. The confidence, the creativity, the joy - it’s all right there. These programs don’t just teach skills; they give kids a place to shine and to feel proud of themselves in ways that last well beyond the performance. Huge shout out to the amazing team that makes these programs possible!

  • The same is true for our school nurses, our unsung heroes. They are the calm in the storm, the reassuring presence for kids who aren’t feeling well, and the steady support for families navigating everything from everyday bumps and bruises to more complex needs.

  • I also love the way our schools embrace culture and community - events like the Día de los Muertos celebration are such a beautiful example. They create opportunities for learning, connection, and honoring traditions in ways that feel meaningful and inclusive.

  • The school garden and our library are two spaces that quietly reflect the heart of Haldane, and both are shaped in such meaningful ways by our library team. The garden is a place where students get their hands in the soil, slow down, and connect with something real and tangible. And inside, our librarians bring that same sense of care and curiosity to the library, creating a warm, welcoming environment where every child can find a book, a corner, or a moment that feels just right. Our staff have a gift for making both spaces feel alive and inviting - places where students feel safe to explore, imagine, and grow.

  • And then there are the classroom parents - the ones who show up again and again, often behind the scenes, organizing, supporting, coordinating, and helping everything run smoothly. Their work is tireless and often invisible, but it makes a real difference for both teachers and students every single day.

If I had to choose one moment that really captures what Haldane is all about, it would be this:

After our daughter had a bike accident near school, it was an incredible Haldane teacher who stepped in and took care of her. In a moment that could have felt scary and overwhelming, she brought calm, competence, and genuine care. Not only did this teacher scoop our daughter up off the pavement, she called me with an update, drove our daughter home, and then returned to school and brought her bike to our house. Later that night we realized our daughter’s backpack was still in the teacher’s car and she came back again to deliver it. As a parent, there is nothing more reassuring than knowing that when your child needs help, someone will show up with steadiness and kindness, truly going above and beyond the call of duty!

That moment has stayed with me.

Because at the end of the day, what makes Haldane special isn’t just our strong academics, amazing programs, and heartwarming events - it’s the people. The ones who notice, who care, who step in, who create opportunities, and who make sure every child feels seen.

It’s those small moments, over and over again, that add up to something really meaningful. And it’s why this community matters so much.
